President Obama Proclaims "National Oceans Month."

President Barack Obama recently proclaimed June 2009 “National Oceans Month” and set up a task force to craft the first US national policy for sustainably managing the country's oceans, drawing praise from environmentalists (and presumably sea creatures). The task force will draft recommendations for managing the resources of US oceans, coasts and the Great Lakes.  How refreshing!

 

The United States has the largest ocean area of any country in the world.  Gulp. That has lead to the US having about 140 laws and 20 agencies attempting to manage it. Double gulp. The new national ocean policy will put together all the laws and agencies into an organized and efficient structure that will help develop a comprehensive, ecosystem-based framework for the long-term conservation and use of our resources.
